Pilita Corrales, ¡Bravo Filipino!

Pilita Corrales and Celeste Legaspi performed at the ¡Bravo Filipino! Music Celebration for the Filipinas Heritage Library last week. Ms. Corrales sang her hit songs 'Kapantay ng Langit' and 'Minsan Minahal'. Also singing with the divas were Rachel Alejandro, Gian Magdangal, Jan Nieto, and Frenchie Dy.

During this video where they were honoring world famous musicians and artists of Filipino descent, they left out quite a few world famous artists: Enrique Iglesias, Junior and his daughter Shaila Durcal, also a singer, Mig Ayesa, Lalaine, Miranda Cosgrove of iCarly, and Kirk Hammett of Metallica.
And Vanessa Hudgens especially, pictured here with her mom and sister.

Shaila Durcal, Junior's daughter, April wedding!

Shaila Durcal, daughter of Filipino singer Junior (Antonio Morales Barreto) and deceased Spanish singer Rocío Durcal, will be marrying her boyfriend and manager Dorio Ferreira in Mexico in April. Her family from the Philippines will also be attending the wedding.
"I told my dad to go to Mexico in the beginning of April, so let's see when he does. Thank God I have people who are helping me plan the wedding. I delegated the work, because if not, it would be impossible to organize the wedding due to my hectic work schedule."

"About my family in Spain, very few of them are coming because it's very complicated, and my family in the Philippines, I told them to come in the beginning of April, that if they want they can stay in our house the days before the wedding, so it will be like a family vacation." The 28-year-old multi-platinum recording artist also told the media that she plans to spend her honeymoon in the Philippines and Thailand.
Her family has had to attend a lot of funerals lately, as her mother died a year and half ago of cancer, and her grandfather (Junior's father) died of anemia in November. Of course, when Shaila talks of her family in the Philippines, she speaks of the Barretos, which includes actresses Claudine Barreto and Gretchen Barreto.
Shaila Durcal was in New York and Miami this weekend to promote her new album, and guest starred today on 'Don Francisco' where she performed her newest hit single "Vuelvete a la luna" (Return to the moon). Shaila's wedding will take place in Acapulco.
Shaila Dúrcal is a stage name. Her real name is Shaila Morales. She took the name as her artistic name after her mother died as a tribute to her. Rocío Dúrcal was a famous Spanish singer, and Rocío Dúrcal was also her stage name. Her real name was María de los Ángeles de Las Heras Ortiz. Junior is also Antonio Morales Barreto's stage name, but it is also his nickname since he was a child in the Philippines. Junior was born in Manila in 1943 during World War II. His mother is a Barreto, of the famous 'Barreto clan' in the Philippines. He grew up in the Philippines until he was 15 when his family emigrated to Spain. He became famous there as part of the music group Los Brincos, married his wife in 1970, had 2 children, and then went home to the Philippines in 1979, starred in several Filipino films during the 80s, and released several hit albums with memorable songs such as 'But If You Leave Me' and 'Yakap' which continues to be a popular karaoke favorite to this day in the Philippines. He became a matinee idol and was nicknamed 'AMB Junior'. Shaila, his 3rd child and youngest, was born in Madrid in 1979 while he was still working in Manila.

He starred in legendary Filipino director Ishmael Bernal's film 'Good Morning Sunshine' with
Vilma Santos. Click here to watch a clip from the movie.

Shaila has actually recently removed the 'Durcal' part from her stage name, and now only goes by 'Shaila'. This is perhaps because of the criticism she received in the Spanish language media that the only reason why she became famous was because of her famous parents, and the momentum of her mother's death. Her first album was released in Mexico, but flopped and she was dropped from her record label. She re-signed to EMI Records, and in the middle of preparing her second album 'Recordando' (Remembering), her mother died. Spanish speakers around the world were in mourning. Her record label pushed the release date of her second album sooner to only months after her mother died, and her album went multi-platinum in Latin America, Spain, and the US. But those are only showbiz intrigues and gossips of course, because Shaila is very talented in her own right. The album is a tribute to her parents, as she performs cover songs of her mother and father's hit songs. Shaila has already recorded one song previously in English called 'My First Love' when she was younger, and she's currently in plans to record an album partly or wholly in English to make the 'crossover' into the English language market, and she has already written a few songs in English, which surely will be released in the Philippines (of course because EMI Philippines is the major recording label there representing such famous acts as Bamboo, Hale, and Kyla, and EMI is Shaila's record label) and will for sure be a success among Filipinos, because after all, she's talented, she's Filipina, she's a sweet girl, and she's Junior's anak. And if you ask me, she's this generation's 'Pilita Corrales'. Mabuhay!

I translated the Shaila Durcal quotes above into English from Spanish from this news item from Chile:

Aga Muhlach Shirtless Pics

Aga Muhlach is on the cover of the January 2008 issue of Men's Health, and this is the woman who Aga Muhlach was insane to ever have broken up with - Dayanara Torres. I'll be honest, I don't like Charlene Gonzalez, not that she's not pretty or a good person, but she's just too plain as far as her personality is concerned. She doesn't have charisma. But Dayanara? Well, you and millions of other Filipinos already know the answer to that. To those negative-thinking Pinoys who say that the only reason Dayanara Torres became popular in the Philippines is because of her being a foreigner and for her Caucasian looks, that is ridiculous, because looks can only take you so far in the business, but if Dayanara didn't have the acting talent and charisma and a good heart behind her, the people wouldn't have responded to her in such a manner. Also, just watch her movie, Basta't Kasama Kita with Aga Muhlach, and her acting is fantastic, and that was such a great movie, and she always talks about the Philippines in her interviews with the Spanish language media. Always. Enrique Iglesias' mother is Filipina, but he hardly ever talks about the Philippines, EVER, to the Spanish media, but Dayanara does, she's a truer Pinoy than those two shameful kids, and she doesn't even have Pinoy blood, but she's proud to have worked in the Philippines, and she even started her own charity to give back to the poor in the Philippines, and for that, I love her. Actually, Enrique does talk about it, but only sometimes, but hardly ever.
Oil Painting by Mamerto Evanglista

This is just a lesson to all the parents out there, pride in the Philippines is not something that a person of Filipino descent will automatically grow up with, you have to instill it in them and teach your children to be proud of who they are, and that especially includes, their cultural heritage. If you don't, they end up like Tia Carrere, and thousands of other closet Filipinos growing up in the US, UK, Australia (
especially Australia), or wherever out there who are such insecure persons that they have to hide a part of who they are just to try to find acceptance in the world. And you know, people like that will never be happy. Sam Milby, even though he's a nice guy, he is annoying sometimes with all his pretentiousness and he's a horrible actor (yes I watched those baduy movies he did with Bea Alonzo and Toni Gonzaga and I was horribly disappointed and annoyed from all of the bad acting he did that ruined the movies, and I'm not just throwing rocks at glass houses because I grew up in theatre and musical theatre, so I know the difference between good acting and bad acting, and he's a horrible actor, he needs lots of work and training, hehe, however, Bea and Toni are great actresses and are really talented) and he's such a closet case as far other things are concerned, but at least he's proud of being a Filipino.

Dayanara you rock our world.Men's Health
magazine opens the year with a big splash as wakeboarding enthusiast Aga Muhlach shares the benefits of staying fit and living right. The former matinee idol talks about the motivation that drove him to succeed in losing 60 pounds: finding something to be passionate about. With that, he took the plunge by getting hooked on the activity that he loved the most—water sports.

Aga, a longtime jetski racer, discovered that passion in the form of wakeboarding. "Any water sport para sa akin is nice. The fact that you go out of town, you leave Manila, that's the best. You're out of this ciudad; out of all this chaos. It's always a date para sa akin when we go out of town: me, my wife, and the kids."

Before, Aga used to weigh 220 pounds because of his year-and-a-half vacation from showbiz work. His much-deserved rest from the business became a liability as he stopped working out and gained unwanted weight. The insecurities he felt affected his social life as he turned down invitation after invitation to dinner parties from friends and the like. To put it simply, he didn't want to be seen.

But all of that is now a thing of the past because the once 220 pound heartthrob is now tipping the scales at 160. The former Bagets star is once again in top form, all of that thanks to a healthy diet, discipline, and wakeboarding.

As Aga would say, "Exercising is really important. You should make it a part of your life already until the day you die. It keeps you young; it gives you that feeling of security. Kahit piso lang ang pera mo but if you feel good and you know you look good, then you're on top of the world."

Like Aga, you can enjoy the world of wakeboarding by following these simple steps to avoid kissing the water bubbles: One, sit still; two, sit comfortably; three, let it happen; and four, grip it. To experience it firsthand, visit the top wakeboarding hotspots the country has to offer: Lago de Oro in Batangas and Camsur Watersports Comples in Camarines Sur.

Grab yourself a copy of "Men's Health" to check out more ways to become a fitter and stronger you. After all, summer is fast approaching and washboard abs leave more than a lasting impression. - Elyas Isabelo Salanga, PEP

Filipino singer Antonio Morales Barreto "Junior" at father's funeral

Filipino singer Antonio Morales Barreto "Junior" is living through difficult moments right now. His father, Antonio Morales, died on Thursday, November 22, 2007 at the age of 93 from anemia. Filipino singer-actor Antonio Morales Barreto "Junior" serenades Vilma Santos

Filipino singer-actor Junior (AMB or Antonio Morales Barreto) serenades Vilma Santos in Good Morning Sunshine (1980) with his hit song that he wrote and produced, Yakap.

Junior is the father of current hitmaker Shaila Durcal. Junior is 64 years old now and the oldest of 5 siblings and the Barreto sisters are 28 to circa-40 years old now (yes, they are, money does wonderful things in keeping you young looking and beautiful), and Filipino families are big so it's not uncommon to have cousins and immediate relatives that are twenty even thirty years older than you. But I don't have to tell you that, you probably already do.

Some Filipinos were comparing Claudine Barreto to Shaila Durcal, measuring their beauty against one another as if they were competing celebrities, but they're family by blood, Jesus Christ. But I guess it's normal since Filipinos always compare the beauty of Filipino actors/actresses with their sons/daughters or siblings, speaking of which, in my humble opinion, Gretchen is much more beautiful than her sisters, hehehe. I didn't like it before, but anyway I guess it's all fun, what fun is it having celebs if besides idolizing them, we can't also evaluate their beauty and compare them with each other, hehe.

Thanks to VSTProductions for sharing this great clip with Filipinos!

Antonio Morales Barreto "Junior" in Hola Magazine

So I'm finally talking about Junior, and this was my latest edit on Junior's article from that "encyclopedia" and I'm very happy about it, I added a lot of parts, a lot a lot of parts, including his Filipino movies and the tri-lingual part just because some Pinoys have this presumption that some Filipinos who have Spanish blood lived in an enclave amongst themselves in the Philippines where they only speak Spanish and drink wine and lounge at the pool, it's the image burned into their brains from the stereotypes from Filipino movies, ridiculous because Junior is as Pinoy as any other Filipino out there, and he wrote his songs in Tagalog, and speaks in Tagalog as well, and both of his parents are Filipino, it's just that his father just happens to be of Spanish descent, but he was born and raised in the Philippines making him a Filipino. It's really funny how Filipinos viewed Junior as a "Spaniard foreigner visiting the Philippines" during his popularity and didn't even realize that he's Filipino and still to this day sometimes until I posted this video of his song Yakap on Youtube, and Spaniards view him as a Filipino. It's because some Pinoys don't understand that's why, that the Spanish-speaking world is different from the English-speaking world in that their cultures and history are very, very different, so the Spanish-speaking world today doesn't really focus on race and racial fractions and quantities of a person, it's the country you were born in and your culture that determines who you are. Even though many Latin Americans and Filipinos have Spanish blood, they're not identified as Spanish when they go to Spain, they identify with the country that's close to their heart, the country they were born in. And for Junior, that's our Philippines, always. We'll post more pictures later, I'm trying to keep the posts short, which is impossible because I'm a writer and writing has always come naturally for me so I embellish a lot in what I write about, which is I guess good for a blog format, since that's what it's all about. Junior with daughter, singer Shaila Durcal: (their family is fond of stage names since "Junior", "Shaila Durcal", and "Rocio Durcal" are all artistic names, but not their real names, I guess it's a good way to keep your showbiz life separate from your family life)

Claudine Barreto and her sisters are his family by blood because his mother is a Barreto, and there's only one Barreto clan in the Philippines, and if you like San Miguel Beer, be grateful to their ancestors as San Miguel Corporation, Southeast Asia’s first brewery was established on Oct. 4, 1890 by Enrique Maria Barreto de Ycaza. A few of them have done business with and are friends of my cousin who works in Advertising and Public Relations for TV and print media, no he's not just a Kapuso or Kapamilya, that's ridiculous, and it's also a very successful marketing plan from the TV networks to draw in viewers from the C-D classes by making them feel like "family" (Kapamilya) and drawing in their "heart" (Kapuso), it's a great marketing plan for both networks, since it's obviously working considering the passionate online debates I've seen that Kapusos have versus Kapamilyas, that stuff is hilarious, anyway business is business and he works for both and has worked for both TV networks doing all that kind of stuff that he does, I don't care, hehe, anyway, the Barretos are from Manila and they own a bunch of companies, and Junior's from that one. And Junior was born in Manila. If you're confused about why his mother is a Barreto but his name is Antonio Morales Barreto, a lot of Filipinos were when I posted the video, it's because in Spanish naming conventions, the father's surname goes before the mother's. I believe that the way Filipinos do it now, where the middle name became the place to put the mother's surname, was just a clever adaptation our ancestors made to keep part of their heritage alive when they were told by the new colonizers after 1898 that you could only have one surname. So they found the loophole, "since there's no more space for our mother's surname, we'll put that in place of the middle name." And I theorize that that's how it came about. I can't be sure, because Filipino historians are so, like they don't care sometimes about researching these important things, so there's a lot of holes to fill in for us Filipinos about our history, but think about it, what other logical explanation is there for it? Putting your mother's surname as your middle name is certainly not a British or American tradition, in their middle names, they put names that are similiar to first names, but never the mother's surname because it's not the cultural tradition.

I'd also just like to say that I was really happy about what Aga Muhlach said about how the tv networks should just combine and find a way to work together, because that's what I always thought. Filipinos are always competing with other Filipinos, and we're always divided. But there's strength to be found in unity.
Junior (born Antonio Morales Barreto on May 10, 1943 in Manila, Philippines) is a Filipino singer and actor. He is the oldest of 5 sons. He was 15 years old when his family settled in Barcelona, Spain then in Madrid. He is tri-lingual and speaks Spanish, English, and Tagalog.

In 1957, he became part of the group Jump, a pioneering Spanish electric guitar group. In the group’s popularity, he was included in the movie Me Enveneno De Azules in 1969. His unstaked first themes Todo Porque Te Quiero (It’s All Because I Love You) in 1969 and Perdóname with English theme The Snake in 1973.

He became part of the group Los Brincos with Juan Pardo. His brothers Miguel and Ricky Morales were invited to join the group. Later, he and Juan Pardo left their group as Juan y Júnior. One of their songs include Spanish version of “Fool On The Hill” by John Lennon and Paul McCartney from LP titled Júnior in 1976.

In 1979, he stopped his career to manage career of his wife late Rocío Dúrcal whom he has 3 children, including singer Shaila Dúrcal who is dedicated not only to her mother but also to her mother’s namesake Rocío Jurado and Colombian diva Soraya who have been cancer victims.

In 1980, he starred in the Filipino movies Good Morning Sunshine with Vilma Santos, Bongga ka Day, and Disco Madhouse and released an album in Tagalog for the Philippines. One of his most popular songs that he wrote and produced was "Yakap". [1]

Filipino singer Enrique Iglesias

Filipino singer Enrique Iglesias is back on the top of the charts with his latest album Insomniac and with a Top 5 Single "Do You Know".

“Though I was born in Madrid, my being a Filipino is very strong in me,” says Enrique. “When I was growing up, my mom (Isabel Preysler) would always talk about the Philippines. She taught us the things that are very important to Filipino culture such as family, being hospitable to guests, and fear of God. I even remember the Filipino dishes she used to whip up.” - Manila Standard, March 18, 2004

Enrique Iglesias Talks About Being Filipino

"I think it must be harder to be female than male. Apart from having to deal with period pains, pregnancy and child birth, I think women are more emotional than men. It's not just that they find it easier to talk about emotions, I think they actually feel emotions more deeply."

"I'm as comfortable with women as I am with men. Of my closest friends, three are men and two are women.

"I learned a lot about women from my mother and my nanny, but I don't think you really get to know what makes women tick until you have a romantic relationship."

"Like most men, I'm not very good at romantic gestures."

I cannot believe that we achieved that in only 12 days, and I don't even know anything about SEO or whatever the hell that stuff is called, although I've been studying it like crazy these past few days even though it's like studying the lost language of Atlantis. And can you believe it, we were thinking about it but we didn't even buy our own domain, we just used Blogger's service and server and I just posted my heart away during free time in between work, whoever said you need to buy a domain to have a successful website is totally wrong. But it wouldn't have been possible without any of you guys support, so congratulations everybody!

Thanks again everybody, and thanks to Tanikalang Ginto and all our friends in the roll! God Bless and we'll be sure to work hard to provide you with meaningful content for the Pinoy people! Mabuhay!
