Shaila Durcal, Junior's daughter, April wedding!

Shaila Durcal, daughter of Filipino singer Junior (Antonio Morales Barreto) and deceased Spanish singer Rocío Durcal, will be marrying her boyfriend and manager Dorio Ferreira in Mexico in April. Her family from the Philippines will also be attending the wedding.
"I told my dad to go to Mexico in the beginning of April, so let's see when he does. Thank God I have people who are helping me plan the wedding. I delegated the work, because if not, it would be impossible to organize the wedding due to my hectic work schedule."

"About my family in Spain, very few of them are coming because it's very complicated, and my family in the Philippines, I told them to come in the beginning of April, that if they want they can stay in our house the days before the wedding, so it will be like a family vacation." The 28-year-old multi-platinum recording artist also told the media that she plans to spend her honeymoon in the Philippines and Thailand.
Her family has had to attend a lot of funerals lately, as her mother died a year and half ago of cancer, and her grandfather (Junior's father) died of anemia in November. Of course, when Shaila talks of her family in the Philippines, she speaks of the Barretos, which includes actresses Claudine Barreto and Gretchen Barreto.
Shaila Durcal was in New York and Miami this weekend to promote her new album, and guest starred today on 'Don Francisco' where she performed her newest hit single "Vuelvete a la luna" (Return to the moon). Shaila's wedding will take place in Acapulco.
Shaila Dúrcal is a stage name. Her real name is Shaila Morales. She took the name as her artistic name after her mother died as a tribute to her. Rocío Dúrcal was a famous Spanish singer, and Rocío Dúrcal was also her stage name. Her real name was María de los Ángeles de Las Heras Ortiz. Junior is also Antonio Morales Barreto's stage name, but it is also his nickname since he was a child in the Philippines. Junior was born in Manila in 1943 during World War II. His mother is a Barreto, of the famous 'Barreto clan' in the Philippines. He grew up in the Philippines until he was 15 when his family emigrated to Spain. He became famous there as part of the music group Los Brincos, married his wife in 1970, had 2 children, and then went home to the Philippines in 1979, starred in several Filipino films during the 80s, and released several hit albums with memorable songs such as 'But If You Leave Me' and 'Yakap' which continues to be a popular karaoke favorite to this day in the Philippines. He became a matinee idol and was nicknamed 'AMB Junior'. Shaila, his 3rd child and youngest, was born in Madrid in 1979 while he was still working in Manila.

He starred in legendary Filipino director Ishmael Bernal's film 'Good Morning Sunshine' with
Vilma Santos. Click here to watch a clip from the movie.

Shaila has actually recently removed the 'Durcal' part from her stage name, and now only goes by 'Shaila'. This is perhaps because of the criticism she received in the Spanish language media that the only reason why she became famous was because of her famous parents, and the momentum of her mother's death. Her first album was released in Mexico, but flopped and she was dropped from her record label. She re-signed to EMI Records, and in the middle of preparing her second album 'Recordando' (Remembering), her mother died. Spanish speakers around the world were in mourning. Her record label pushed the release date of her second album sooner to only months after her mother died, and her album went multi-platinum in Latin America, Spain, and the US. But those are only showbiz intrigues and gossips of course, because Shaila is very talented in her own right. The album is a tribute to her parents, as she performs cover songs of her mother and father's hit songs. Shaila has already recorded one song previously in English called 'My First Love' when she was younger, and she's currently in plans to record an album partly or wholly in English to make the 'crossover' into the English language market, and she has already written a few songs in English, which surely will be released in the Philippines (of course because EMI Philippines is the major recording label there representing such famous acts as Bamboo, Hale, and Kyla, and EMI is Shaila's record label) and will for sure be a success among Filipinos, because after all, she's talented, she's Filipina, she's a sweet girl, and she's Junior's anak. And if you ask me, she's this generation's 'Pilita Corrales'. Mabuhay!

I translated the Shaila Durcal quotes above into English from Spanish from this news item from Chile:
