New TV shows debut!
Here in the City of Angels, where my TV watching schedule during my free time is split between the three languages my brain understands fluently: Spanish, English, and Tagalog, these next two weeks are super f-ing exciting, hehe, because the second season of one of the most fantastic TV shows ever, Greek, debuts on March 24 on ABC Family, which I've been waiting for for 6 f-ing months, hehe. And today at 5pm on Telefutura, I'm excited to watch the US nationwide debut of 'Mi Prima Ciela' (My Cousin, The Sky), the newest hit Venezuelan telenovela starring Manuel Sosa and Miss Venezuela-Universe 2004 Monica Spear. And then, also on March 24 at 6pm on Telefutura, Pasion de Amor's Alfonso Baptista returns to TV with a new telenovela 'La Marca del Deseo' (The Mark of Desire). And KC Concepcion will make her teleserye debut with "I Am KC" a weekly show consisting of 4 weekly episodes airing Saturday mornings where she'll star with Jake Cuenca and Ai Ai de las Alas, which we'll be watching here via satellite. Also, for those in England, don't forget to watch our Charice Pempengco on the Paul O'Grady show! Fantastic TV-watching month, my Pinoys!
Janina San Miguel and her English
Jennifer Barrientos (above from Mabuhay Beauties) will represent Philippines in the upcoming Miss Universe pageant, but speaking of the controversy with Janina San Miguel, Binibining Pilipinas-World 2008, and her lack of English proficiency (see video), I don't think it was that bad, the fact that she tried her hardest to answer in English and didn't give up, that's why the judges chose her, because they were charmed by her determination. But the only reason why it caused such an uproar among Filipinos is because of the unfortunate belief among Filipinos that those Filipinos who speak English fluently are smarter than Filipinos who don't speak English, and that the level of a Filipino's intelligence is directly correlated to his/her level of proficiency in the English language, which is of course false and absolutely ridiculous. You don't need to speak English fluently to be an intelligent person, or to win Miss Universe / World / International, there were tons of girls over the years who answered their questions with interpreters, but won the crown anyway. This touches on deep issues with Filipino identity and has it's roots in American colonization that still affects the Philippines to this day that I've probably talked about a million times on this blog, so I won't repeat myself to not sound repetitive, hehe. But check out this amazing documentary about the beauty industry in Venezuela. It talks about the fact that despite being a country raft with poverty, Venezuela is the country that spends the most money on beauty products in the world, and it talks of the Venezuelan obsession with international beauty pageants. Featuring Miss Universe Alicia Machado. Watch it, it's fascinating.
